However you look at it you can't deny that the words above are very attractive. The only thing better than finding a bargain is to get something for nothing. Or is it? Sometimes there is a hidden price to be paid, and this is especially true on the World Wide Web.

There are many ‘free’ offers on the Web, including free software, free information, fill in a survey or enter a competition to win a prize, the list goes on. But have you ever stopped to consider where all that junk mail that spills through your letterbox comes from? Or why the spam in your inbox has multiplied?

The fact is that most websites have an ulterior motive for giving something away. They might harvest your email address, your home address, or any other personal details you offer and then compile a list along with all of the other people who filled in the form. The list can then be sold to organisations who will pay handsomely for this information so that they can target likely consumers of their products or services.

But let’s not get paranoid here, there are ways around it. Reputable websites will usually be upfront about their intentions. View the site’s privacy policy, read the small print, and if there is one; always tick the little box that says you don't want your information to be shared with other companies. If in doubt, set up a new email account with one of the many free web services and use that for your freebie purposes. Above all, never give your personal details or main email address unless you are confident about doing so.

Once again, I am drawn to the subject of eBay after reading an article stating that over 10,000 people in the UK alone are making a full time living with the service. As a self confessed eBay fanatic I think this is wonderful news, especially considering that not so long ago eBay was being called “the world’s online flea market” - clearly it is much more powerful than that! Anyway, here’s another tip:

If you are an eBay seller it makes good business sense to reassure potential customers of your reliability. One of the best (and often overlooked) ways of doing this is with your “About Me” page. By creating a seller profile detailing your terms of delivery, returns policy, etc, you can inspire confidence and increase bids and sales. It seems such an obvious thing to do that I’m surprised so few people actually take advantage of this free feature. Get ahead of the competition and make the most of your eBay account by creating an “About Me” page and pretty soon you too could be joining the 10,000!

The Secret Of Wealth Creation

We all dream of winning the lottery, inheriting a vast fortune, or suddenly becoming wealthy by some other means, but not many of us deliberately set out to amass great wealth. In fact, beyond the vague aspirations mentioned, I would wager that most people are far too busy earning a living to give it any serious thought.

I am told that the ‘secret’ of creating monetary wealth is to add value to other people’s lives. What that value is can take many forms. It could be a product such as a washing machine, CD or book, or it could be a service, for example web design, accounting, or copywriting. Now to create great wealth we need to add a lot of value to a lot of people’s lives. The more unique the product or service is then the more value it will hold, and the more people who are enriched by the product or service, the more wealth that is created. This can be summed up as…

more value + more people = more wealth

Simple eh? And the great thing about the World Wide Web is that we have access to millions of users, so we don’t need to go far to find a lot of people. So far so good.

Armed with this knowledge it would seem to be quite a straightforward exercise. Simply decide on a product or service (remembering that the more unique it is the more value it will hold), and then use the power of the World Wide Web to offer that value to lots of people - wealth will surely then follow by the truck load!
